Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was a French artist born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in 1869, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern art and a master of color, line, and form. Initially trained as a lawyer, Matisse discovered painting during a period of illness and quickly abandoned his legal career to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Gustave Moreau. His early work evolved rapidly through Post-Impressionism and into a bold new visual language that would define his career.

In the early 1900s, Matisse became a leading figure of Fauvism — a movement characterized by vivid, non-naturalistic color and expressive brushwork — producing landmark works such as Woman with a Hat and The Joy of Life. Over the following decades he worked prolifically across painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, spending much of his later life in Nice and developing his celebrated cut-paper compositions, the gouaches découpées. His prints and lithographs, many produced in collaboration with Parisian ateliers, are prized by collectors for their luminous color and deceptive simplicity. Matisse died in Nice in 1954, leaving a legacy that continues to shape art, design, and visual culture worldwide.
