Joan Miró

Joan Miró was a Catalan artist whose playful symbols and dreamlike imagery helped shape Surrealism and modern art in the 20th century. Born in Barcelona in 1893, he initially studied business before a nervous breakdown pushed him to fully commit to art, during which he trained under Francesc Galí and quickly gained attention through early exhibitions in Barcelona and Paris.

After moving between Paris and Spain, Miró became closely involved with the Surrealist movement in the 1920s, while continuing to experiment with painting, collage, printmaking, sculpture, and later ceramics. His career was marked by constant reinvention, from works inspired by Dutch masters to monumental murals and abstract sculptures. Celebrated internationally during his lifetime, Miró received major awards and retrospectives and remains known for an artistic language that feels both childlike and deeply poetic.
