About This Work

Flight — of lovers, of angels, of the soul itself — is among the most persistent and personal images in Chagall's visual language. From his earliest canvases in Vitebsk to his late prints and tapestries, figures rise weightlessly above the earth, freed from gravity by love, memory, or dream. The Flight belongs to the same rare Mourlot publication as The Circus — a suite of lithographs produced for Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York in 1968 to accompany a series of 27 gouaches by Chagall, making each impression both an independent work and a document of one of the most significant gallery relationships in twentieth-century art.

Pierre Matisse — son of Henri Matisse — was Chagall's primary American dealer for decades, championing his work to collectors and institutions across the United States. Publications produced under his gallery's name are among the most carefully considered and collectible of Chagall's printed editions.
