About This Work

The bullfight held a deep and lifelong fascination for Dalí — a fellow Catalan who saw in the corrida the same collision of beauty, violence, and ritual theatre that animated his Surrealist vision. The bullfighter, or torero, appears across his work as a figure of mythic intensity: heroic, mortal, and suffused with the drama of the arena. Paired here with the butterfly, Dalí's recurring symbol of transformation, the soul, and the ephemera, the composition sets brute force against fragile transcendence in characteristic Surrealist tension.

Produced in 1972, this work belongs to Dalí's mature printed output, a period in which he worked extensively with master printers and publishers to produce carefully controlled limited editions for the international collector market. Hand-signed in the lower right and numbered 195 from an edition of 250, this impression carries the full authentication of the artist's personal involvement.
