Among the most psychologically charged works in Dalí's monumental Divine Comedy cycle, The Sodomites captures Dante's poignant encounter with his beloved teacher Brunetto Latini in the seventh circle of Hell. Rather than illustrating the scene literally, Dalí transforms it into a haunting surrealist vision — elongated figures, ethereal forms, and an atmosphere of spiritual isolation that conveys the weight of damnation far more powerfully than any literal rendering could.
This wood engraving is part of Dalí's celebrated cycle of one hundred illustrations — one for each canto of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. The original watercolors were translated into exceptionally refined color wood engravings by master craftsmen for the Les Heures Claires edition, published in Paris in 1964 and widely regarded as one of the greatest illustrated books of the twentieth century.
