When Surrealism Met the Marx Brothers
Few artistic friendships were as wonderfully improbable as that of Salvador Dalí and Harpo Marx. Their shared fascination with the absurd began in 1936, when Dalí famously presented Harpo with a harp strung with barbed wire. Harpo responded with a photograph of himself playing the instrument, his fingers comically wrapped in bandages.
Their friendship inspired Giraffes on Horseback Salad, an extraordinary Surrealist film conceived by Dalí for the Marx Brothers but never produced.
More than three decades later, Dalí revisited the project's fantastical imagery in Symphony Bicyclette. A sea of cyclists races beneath a blazing sky, while musicians perform aboard a towering, ship-like structure. Harpo's harp, Chico's piano, and Groucho's irreverent presence evoke the extraordinary meeting of two worlds: Dalí's Surrealism and the Marx Brothers' anarchic comedy.
A remarkable celebration of imagination, humor, and one of art history's most unexpected creative friendships.
