About the Work
A luminous scene from Chagall's celebrated Daphnis et Chloë suite (1961) — 42 richly layered color lithographs inspired by Longus's ancient Greek pastoral romance. After traveling to Greece in 1952 and 1954, Chagall translated its Mediterranean light, landscape, and atmosphere into one of his most ambitious graphic cycles.
Created in close collaboration with Atelier Mourlot over several years, individual plates required as many as 25 colors — each demanding a separate lithographic stone. The suite was issued in a standard book edition of 250 and a separate deluxe edition of 60, with each lithograph individually signed and numbered by the artist. This impression belongs to that scarce signed deluxe edition.
Admired for its luminous color and emotional depth, Daphnis et Chloë remains one of the landmark achievements of 20th-century stone lithography.
